Infrared Thermal Imaging Products for applications in the Non-Invasive Medical market.

We have had the privilege to develop custom infrared thermal imaging products for a number of OEM’s who produce/resell cameras and systems for the Medical market. These OEM’s, with Lumitron's assistance if desired, create a complete solution, unique to them, addressing the specific needs of their customers. Lumitron has developed a number of camera platforms that employ both cooled and uncooled technologies that are designed to meet as many of those needs as possible. To assure ease of application for our OEM clients, we have developed these cameras with a common communication/control platform that allows for a mix of camera technologies in a single system package without additional software costs.

The Lumitron camera is designed to provide the maximum level of performance and features in the smallest weight/power package available. With one of the smallest footprints in the industry for a mid format (320x240) camera, weight as low as 1.1Kg for a complete camera, and control of camera functions using a simple to understand Graphical User Interface, the camera is ideal for Medical applications.

A variety of lenses, detector technologies, packaging options, and camera performance levels allow you the client to develop the camera that provides best cost/performance for a particular need. For Medical applications, our cameras may be used as a standalone system or in conjunction with visible CCD cameras providing a means of documenting infrared imagery.

The cooled (3-5 µm) camera is used for applications where image quality is critical and high sensitivity is required. This camera is perfect for addressing the very sensitive measurement of blood flow in reattached limbs or in joints where inflammation exists. There are a number of lens options that will best fit the camera field of view to your specific design requirements.

The uncooled (8-14 µn) camera is used for applications that do not require extreme sensitivity such as body temperature monitoring at custom crossings for disease control. The uncooled technology provides a lower cost solution with minimal to no maintenance.

The Lumitron platform provides both analog video and digital video simultaneously. The advantage here is that a local display can be provided without tying up CPU time sending a video output to an operator. This is valuable when the image being viewed is also being stored for future reference/comparison. This has been used in the long term progress reports on physical therapy.

The enclosure is just as critical a component to the over all performance of the camera as the detector and lens are. This is addressed with either a standard Lumitron camera housing, a NEMA 4 (IP65/66) enclosure, or a Lumitron/client designed package. This allows the client to specifically address the application requirements as well as preserving their own look and feel to the product. The standard Lumitron camera housing and several lenses are also available in stainless steel meeting the corrosion requirements of NEMA 4X.

The Lumitron camera features an internal focusing technique that moves the focal plane array, allowing the use of fixed focus lenses rather than costly motorized lens assemblies. Using a fixed focus lens greatly simplifies packaging design; the lens is easily made water and dust resistant. A single field of view camera typically does not need a separate camera housing thus eliminating the cost/weight penalties of a housing and IR transparent window.

The camera incorporates a multitude of features important to Medical applications. There are eight different color palettes available and up to twelve NUC tables that can be used to provide the best viewable image for the client. A built in calibration flag under software control is used to provide the best possible image quality. Sophisticated built-in test routines warn the operator of any problems and assist in trouble shooting. Internal temperature sensors automatically adjust camera operation to compensate for wide variations in ambient temperature.
